Today more and more people make the eco-friendly and health-conscious decision to travel via bicycles, leading to a greater demand for bicycle parking in cities. To accommodate this demand, cities have begun converting car parking spots and portions of parking lanes into bicycle parking facilities known as “Bike Corrals”. A Bike Corral is clearly differentiated from the road through the use of flexible delineators, buffers such as wheelstops or planters, or a combination of such elements.

Through the use of Bike Corrals, these areas provide substantially more bicycle parking. A single parking space can accommodate up to 10-12 bicycles. The increase in parking capacity often leads to greater customer visits to local businesses. Finally, the reallocation of bike racks from the sidewalks onto the streets declutters the walking space for pedestrians, therefore creates a more welcoming walking environment.
